Caras mum originally contacted Wheels 2 Work after hearing about the scheme through a contact at Cheshire County Council. Cara had been accepted onto a course at Winsford College, which was due to start at the beginning of September. Winsford is approximately 23 miles from Macclesfield and public transport to the college was not a viable option. Cara wasn’t able to rely on lifts due to the frequency and distance that she was having to travel, and therefore her mum wondered if Wheels 2 Work could help.
Cara met with Craig Wallace, the Accessibility Manager for Macclesfield Borough Council, to discuss the scheme further and to see how Wheels 2 Work could help her.
She was accepted onto the scheme and arrangements were made for her to complete her CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) in mid August - which she did and the next step was to arrange collection of the bike and all its safety equipment. In late August, Cara was picked up and taken to Vale Motorcycles in Middlewich where she was fitted out with a helmet, jacket, gloves, waterproof trousers and high vis safety belt. Cara was introduced to Matt Green at Vale Motorcycles who explained the user and maintenance instructions for the bike. The full terms and conditions of the scheme were explained and signed with Cara. She was then guided home by Craig to make sure that she got back safely, and they arranged to meet a couple of weeks later.
September
Cara and Craig met to check that everything was ok with Cara, her college course and the bike. She was really grateful for the bike, was really enjoying it and it was making life a lot easier in terms of travel problems.
October
Cara was introduced to Claire Whitchurch, the Wheels 2 Work Coordinator, who started with the scheme in October. Cara was still really happy with the bike, and had added some stickers to personalise it. (The stickers were removable – just in case!) The bike was checked over and a monthly contribution payment was collected.
November
Cara met with Claire for her monthly review meeting and mentioned that she had started her driving lessons and had bought a car for when she passed her test. She had also been making alternative arrangements for travel when the weather has poor.
December
Letter sent out to Cara advising of Christmas leave, winter gritting routes and contact details over the Christmas period.
January
Cara met with Claire for her monthly review meeting. She was hoping to put in for her driving test soon, as she was doing really well with her lessons. Having her own car at home meant that her mum or dad could take her out of an evening for extra practice. Was still really happy with the bike.
February
Cara called into the Town Hall to speak to Claire. She had passed her driving test!!. She no longer needed the scooter as she had her car for travelling in now. Arranged to return the bike as soon as possible along with all the safety equipment.
Cara was really grateful for the loan of the scooter. It meant that she had a reliable method of transport for college, gave her the opportunity to meet with friends without having to rely on lifts and has also helped her to pass her driving test. Cara said that riding the scooter gave her confidence on the road and that her awareness of driving and other road users has definitely helped her to pass her test. She has seen other drivers of a similar age taking their lessons or going for a driving test and noticed the differences in confidence and awareness. She was really grateful to Wheels 2 Work and hoped that others could benefit as well as she has from the scheme.
